Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Northern Nigeria is home to a rich architectural heritage that reflects centuries of cultural exchange, indigenous craftsmanship, and Islamic influences. In Kontagora Local Government Area (LGA) of Niger State, traditional architecture, such as the iconic mud houses, ancient mosques, and palaces, offers a glimpse into the region's historical and cultural identity. However, with rapid urbanization and modernization, many of these architectural masterpieces are at risk of being lost. Photography can serve as a vital tool for preserving and showcasing the beauty of Northern Nigerian architecture, documenting structures that may be disappearing due to neglect, environmental factors, or new construction practices. This study explores the role of photography in preserving and promoting Northern Nigerian architecture in Kontagora, examining how photographs can serve as both a record of the past and a tool for cultural pride.
